What will I be doing?
This course will take you through some experimental aquatint techniques, including using monoprint as a resist, sugar lift and spit bite. The tutor Rob White has spent over 20 years working with artists using these techniques. He also uses sugar lift and spit bite in his own work. Rob will show examples of his and other artist’s prints.
Week 1 & 2
In the first week you will look at images of artists who work with experimental aquatint techniques. You will then start by learning a little-used technique of mono printing onto a plate, using the oily print as a resist, working on this technique over the first two evenings.
Week 3 & 4
Exploring sugar lift.
Week 5
Learn different ways of using spit bite.
Throughout the course you will learn techniques to give the best results from your aquatints, including how to ink and wipe the plate in different ways to achieve best results from your images.

What should I bring?
Please bring your sketchbook/ notebook, pencils and a selection of different paintbrushes. It is useful to bring an apron, a pair of rubber gloves for cleaning, and any etching tools that you have.
Aquatint is particularly suitable for describing tone. You will learn a range of different aquatint techniques. Bring an image or images to work from that have tonal information, or where you want to distinguish different areas of texture and tone, for example a pencil, charcoal, pen drawing, painting or a black and white photograph.
Our south London printmaking studio in Stockwell has a small kitchen with a microwave and fridge, plates, cutlery and mugs. Tea and coffee will be provided.
