What will I be doing?

Our Linocut course will take you on a journey from the basics of linocut through to making advanced prints using multiple layers of jigsaw blocks.  Tutor Rob White has many years experience working with artists using these techniques, he will show examples and explain how to look at and break down these prints to make successful multi- layered, multi-colour images. Over the 6 weeks you will practice markmaking, inking and printing in one colour then multiple colours, to include reduction linocut, and more than one black to achieve layers of colour. Then you can explore cutting your lino blocks into pieces, to then ‘jigsaw’ them back together. In this way you can print in a range of colours easily, and explore printing the pieces in different ways- for example printing different elements in different ways on the paper. A lot of fun!

You will make multiple linocuts, from simple one-colour prints exploring markmaking and printmaking technique, through to more complex multi-coloured linocuts, using a key block and multiple layers and/ or pieces.

From the glossary

Linocut

In this relief printing process, an image is carved or etched into a sheet of linoleum. Ink is applied to the lino using a roller; the cut-away areas do not pick up ink. Paper is placed down onto the image and either printed on a press or printed by hand.
