What will I be doing?
The Jigsaw woodcut course will take you on a journey from the basics of jigsaw woodcut through to advanced prints using multiple layers of jigsaw blocks. Tutor Rob White has many years experience working with artists using these techniques, he will show examples and explain how to look at and break down these prints. Over the 8 weeks you will get tips on inking, and cutting your blocks also how to work an image across multiple blocks with some or all of the blocks jigsaw.
You will make an image with shaped coloured sections, with a ket drawing to finish, and which will bring the image together visually.
Week 1
In the first week you will look at some images of artists who work with woodcut and Rob will go through the tools and how to use them. Rob will then demo how to print a wood cut by hand. All students will start cutting a small woodcut.
Week 2
In the second week you will print black prints form the block to get the idea of printing by hand and recut the block if needed. There will be a discussion about how to plan and start a big block.
Week 3
In the third week you will spend the evening cutting your big your block and proof if ready.
Week 4
During week four you will print your big block and recut if needed. You will offset line block onto jigsaw block to transfer the drawing onto next blocks.
Week 5
You will cut up (jigsaw) your coloured block and mix colours for week six.
Week 6 & 7
Print the multiple blocks/ colour layers of your print.
Week 8
The last week you will print line block on colour base layers to finish the image.
About your tutor
Rob White is an artist printmaker who has over twenty years of experience working in the biggest print studios in London, firstly working at Thumbprint Editions on projects for Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor, Damien Hirst, Marc Quinn, Richard Deacon and many others.
Rob wanted to add to his skill set and moved to Paupers Press where he’s worked on projects for Grayson Perry, Tracey Emin, The Chapman Brothers, Peter Blake and others. Alongside this Rob has had a working relationship with Tom Hammick working on many print projects over the last twenty years. Rob works mainly in etching using many different techniques including sugar lift, spit bite, chine collé working with multiple plates and colours.
What should I bring?
Please bring your sketchbook/ notebook, pencils etc. an apron, a pair of rubber gloves for cleaning, and any relief tools that you have.
Jigsaw Woodcut allows you to make complex multi-colour relief images. You can ink the jigsaw pieces in different colours and treat any part as a reduction print or multi bloc image.
Our south London printmaking studio in Stockwell has a small kitchen with a microwave and fridge, plates, cutlery and mugs. Tea and coffee will be provided.
