What will I be doing?

Find out about the properties of water-washable inks for monotype printmaking on this course over 3 mornings. Working with tutor Michelle Avison who uses the techniques extensively in her own work, you will be shown how to use Cranfield Colour (Caligo) water washable inks to make monotypes that exploit the possibilities of the inks, water and oil.

On the first day you will make test prints exploring the different effects that it is possible to achieve using different solvents and by modifying the inks. You will work with line, and explore texture and painterly markmaking.

During the course you will print using an etching press but also be shown how it is possible to hand print images by exploiting both the ink and paper types.

This course is designed to give you a better understanding of how these inks can be exploited for monotype printing. The Cranfield (Caligo) inks are a great, less toxic way of making monotypes, reducing solvent use and you will be able to achieve a range of different subtle results when you have a better understanding of the materials and tools.

You will have the opportunity to explore your own image making with the expert guidance of the tutor, and will learn from Michelle’s considerable experience of monotype printmaking.

The course is underpinned with lots of technical advice and tips for making great monotype prints and to build your confidence and technical skills in the process.

About your tutor

Michelle Avison studied painting at the Slade School of Art in the late 1980s, going on to study Printmaking MA at Wimbledon School of Art. Michelle is an experienced artist educator committed to sharing her printmaking expertise and ideas.

A very experimental printmaker, Michelle’s approach always puts image first and she is really good at helping students develop compelling images and professional printmaking skills. Monoprinting is key to her practice as an artist – informed by her interest in drawing, and training as a painter. She will guide you through different techniques, share some of the things she has learnt and give you tips and pointers to the most of this fabulously versatile technique.
