The first class in a series, focussing on using copper for etching. Learn how to prepare and degrease the copper, then make a hard ground etching, including how to apply the ground, how to draw into the ground, understand etching times and how to build up line work with more than one ‘bite’.
In the second week you will find out how to make corrections, additions and re-etch the plate, making more copies or ‘proofs’ of the image.
Week 3. Learn how to apply aquatint, then stop out and bite the aquatint to different tones. Proof your image again.
Week 4. Make any further changes or additions to the plate, practice ‘scraping out’ and burnshing the plate to make alterations and practice inking and wiping the plate to make a print of your final plate to finish.

Rob White is an artist printmaker who has over twenty years of experience working in the biggest print studios in London, firstly working at Thumbprint Editions on projects for Antony Gormley, Anish Kapoor, Damien Hirst, Marc Quinn, Richard Deacon and many others.
Rob wanted to add to his skill set and moved to Paupers Press where he’s worked on projects for Grayson Perry, Tracey Emin, The Chapman Brothers, Peter Blake and others. Alongside this Rob has had a working relationship with Tom Hammick working on many print projects over the last twenty years. Rob works mainly in etching using many different techniques including sugar lift, spit bite, chine collé working with multiple plates and colours.
Please bring your sketchbook/ notebook, pencils etc. an apron, a pair of rubber gloves for cleaning, and any etching tools that you have.
Hard ground etching is particularly suitable for line work or cross-hatching to achieve tone, texture and pattern. Aquatint is used for applying flat tonal marks. The two techniques will be added to the other on one plate to create your final image.
Bring an image or images to work from that give you this sort of information, for example a pencil, charcoal or pen drawing or a black and white photograph.
Our south London printmaking studio in Stockwell has a small kitchen with a microwave and fridge, plates, cutlery and mugs. Tea and coffee will be provided.
Paper and ink are provided. You will need to buy etching plate which will be available in the studio.
The course is suitable for complete beginners- all you need is enthusiasm and ideas- we will do the rest- enabling you to make great prints through lots of demo, discussion and one-to-one!
If you have etched zinc before and would like to learn about the possibilities of etching copper, this is also the class for you.
Our classes are small in size, maximum 7. This means that you will always have lots of access to the tutor to ask questions and get one-to-one guidance, plus the groups are a good size to talk to and learn from your peers.
Our studio in Stockwell, South London is easy to get to. It is in a quiet, leafy yard- a great place to work.
Tutor Rob White is an expert printmaker, with professional experience working with many artists. He has excellent technical knowledge, from over 20 years of working in professional print editioning and his own work as an artist.
Etching was originally invented as a method for adding decoration to armour during the Middle Ages. Artists began to use metal plates for printing in the 15th century, when Albrecht Durer made work on iron plates. Later artists such as Andrea Mantegna in Italy and Rembrandt in Holland went on to make etchings on copper.
