This course is designed to take you through the basics of monotype printing, trying out different ways of working, including trace monotype, reductive and additive methods, painterly markmaking, drawing, and using stencils.
After the initial four-week introduction, you will focus on making a series of monotypes, working on building your confidence and skills, and using the process to experiment and explore your personal imagery.
You will understand how brilliant monotype is for generating ideas and developing your work in new directions, and how a good knowledge of materials and inks can inform how you make and develop your prints.
The course will facilitate an in-depth and developmental approach to making monoprints. There will be lots of opportunities for discussion and sharing of ideas, technical samples and looking at artists’ work.
Michelle Avison’s considerable experience informs the course- bring a notebook – you’ll need it because there will be technical advice and tips, discussion about paper, tools, inks, printing and one-to-one tutorial advice on technical issues and on how to develop your images.
Michelle Avison studied painting at the Slade School of Art in the late 1980s, going on to study Printmaking MA at Wimbledon School of Art. Michelle is an experienced artist educator committed to sharing her printmaking expertise and ideas.
A very experimental printmaker, Michelle’s approach puts image first and she is really good at helping students develop compelling images and professional printmaking skills. Monoprinting is key to her practice as an artist – informed by her interest in drawing, and training as a painter. She will guide you through different techniques, share some of the things she has learnt and give you tips and pointers to make the most of this fabulously versatile technique.
Printmaking plates, ink and proofing paper are included in the first four weeks. After that you will pay for plate and paper as you may be working larger, on multiple plates and will want to consider different types and colours of paper. We have some good printmaking papers and plate to buy, you will also be given advice about where to purchase anything else you might need.
In the first four weeks there will be some directed drawing and painting exercises which you can use as you develop your work, but also the opportunity to incorporate work from your own research. Please bring ideas, notes, drawings, paintings, photographs that you would like to work from, or items of your own that you would like to draw from directly.
You will need a notebook and/ or sketchbook, and a selection of different pencils, pens, paintbrushes and other drawing tools. More information will be sent out before the class, or added here.
We have aprons to borrow and gloves- please bring your own if you prefer.
Our south London printmaking studio in Stockwell has a small kitchen with a microwave and fridge, plates, cutlery and mugs. Tea and coffee will be provided.
This course is a good introduction to monotype for beginners, if you have done some printing but never tried monoprinting. It is also a really good place to start if you have not done any printing at all before, as it introduces basic principles of printing, including inking, mixing ink, choosing and managing paper, using a printing press and loads of other essential skills.
The course is also suitable for more experienced printmakers who want some new focus, and an opportunity to expand and add to knowledge and skills.
So, to summarise- anyone can join!
HAUSPRINT class sizes are small, with plenty of opportunity to talk to the tutor and you will receive bespoke advice and support. You will have a designated work space and access to two etching presses.
Our classes focus on skill-building alongside discussion of how to make images, and importantly, you will be encouraged to work with printmaking process to generate ideas.
The studio is in a secure private yard and easy to get to, within close walking distance to a number of buses and Stockwell and Oval underground stations. There is lovely outside space, where, weather permitting, you can draw, make prints, eat lunch, or just take a break with a cup of tea.
Your tutor is a very experienced teacher, formerly Head of Printmaking at Morley College, London and a teacher in painting and drawing as well as printmaking.

An exhibition of prints and animations by illustrator, filmmaker and printmaker, Mia Thompson. Mia has worked in monotype and etching, and the exhibition includes a selection of her stop motion animations.
We may take photographs or video in the studio whilst you are there, for our website, social media and other studio marketing. We will always make you aware of this activity. Let us know if you don’t wish you or your work to be photographed and/or identified.

The HAUSPRINT Etching Year is a unique opportunity to learn printmaking skills over one year. This etching course is designed to teach you the essentials of etching, to introduce new techniques and help you build and develop your work, whatever your starting point.
The year will focus on consolidating your etching knowledge, on developing ideas, and on ways to bring ideas and technique together. There will be group discussion, group crit and one-to-one tutorial opportunities which will focus on how to develop your work.
