What will I be doing?

Re-think your ‘sketchbook’ practice. Make a series of simple paper folded and sewn books and use them in group drawing exercises designed to free up your thinking about sketchbooks as repositories for research and how we can start ideas off through drawing.

This course is designed to give you ideas to take into your own practice and to think about how to make your sketchbooks part of your creative thinking.

The course will include directed activities in the morning, drawing and making different paper folds and books together. Then in the afternoon, you will make some sketchbooks to take away with you, putting things together in different ways as catalysts for creative thinking.

Michelle will show you some of her sketchbooks and there will be lots of discussion, sharing of ideas and a look at some other artists as well.

About your tutor

Michelle Avison studied painting at the Slade School of Art, going on to do an MA in Printmaking at Wimbledon School of Art. Michelle is a very experienced artist educator committed to sharing her expertise and ideas.

Michelle works across drawing, painting and printmaking and has always used sketchbooks, especially making and using books of different shapes and sizes which contribute to different ways of drawing and the work that is made as a result.

What should I bring?

Please bring a sketchbook / notebook, pencils, a metal ruler and scalpel or sharp craft knife and any drawing materials that you think you would like to use

Think about the different papers that you could use to make sketchbooks. How do you like to draw and what do you want to draw on? What about recycled materials or found paper/ card? Colour? Texture? Type of paper? Bring some different papers with you.

It’s a good idea to bring lunch. We have a small kitchen with a microwave and fridge, plates, cutlery and mugs. Tea and coffee will be provided.
